Anaerobic Digestion of Pig Slurry in Fixed-Bed and Expanded Granular Sludge Bed Reactors

Anaerobic digestion of animal manure is a potential bioenergy resource that avoids greenhouse gas emissions. However, the conventional approach to use continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) with hydraulic retention times (HRTs) greater than 30 d. Reactors biomass were investigated in this study order increase efficiency process. Filtered pig slurry was used as substrate an expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor and fixed-bed (FB) reactor. The highest degradation (?COD) methane yield (MY) relative chemical oxygen demand (COD) observed at minimum loading rates, MY = 262 L/kgCOD ?COD 73% for FB 292 76% EGSB daily production rate (MPR) maximum rate, MPR 3.00 m3/m3/d HRT 2 d 2.16 3 For both reactors, reduction possible compared conventionally driven CSTRs, offering higher shorter HRT.
